Wrist size and bracelet size are two different numbers
Most sizing mix-ups come from one thing: "7 inches" can mean your wrist or the bracelet. A bracelet has to be a little longer than your wrist or it won't close comfortably or move at all. How much longer depends on the style:
- Cuffs and bangles should fit snugly. Link and chain bracelets should sit slightly loose so they can move. That's Tiffany's guidance.
- Charm bracelets need the most room, because charms take up space between the chain and your wrist. Pandora tells customers who plan to wear more than 5 charms to go up a size.
- Stretch bead bracelets work differently again, because the beads themselves have thickness (more on that below).
Measure your wrist with a paper strip
No soft tape measure? A strip of paper and a ruler works. Tiffany and James Avery both describe this method.
- Cut a strip of paper about ½ in wide and 10 in long. A piece of string works too.
- Wrap it around your wrist just below the wrist bone, where you'd wear a bracelet. Keep it snug but not tight.
- Mark the spot where the end overlaps with a pen.
- Lay the strip flat on a ruler and measure from the end to your mark. Write it down in inches.
- Measure twice, once in the morning and once in the evening, and use the larger number.
- Planning to stack bracelets? Measure each spot on your arm where a bracelet will sit, as Tiffany suggests. Your arm gets wider as you move up. Wearing a necklace too? Our other guides include a necklace length chart with a string test for that.
Printing a paper sizer instead? Check the printed ruler against a real ruler before you use it. Some printers shrink a page to fit.
Wrist to bracelet size
This chart is Brilliant Earth's. The centimeter column is their conversion.
| Your wrist (in) | Your wrist (cm) | Bracelet size |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 5.5 | 12.7 to 14.0 | 5.5 in |
| 5.6 to 6 | 14.1 to 15.3 | 6 in |
| 6.1 to 6.5 | 15.4 to 16.6 | 6.5 in |
| 6.6 to 7 | 16.7 to 17.9 | 7 in |
| 7.1 to 7.5 | 18.0 to 19.0 | 7.5 in |
Other brands build in more room. Pandora's snake chain charm bracelet, for example, pairs a 6.3 in wrist with a 7 in bracelet, a 6.7 in wrist with 7.5 in, and a 7 in wrist with 7.9 in. By our arithmetic, that's 0.7 to 0.9 in added.
How much to add, by style
| Style | How much to add to your wrist | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Charm bracelet | 1 in | James Avery |
| Leather bracelet | ½ in | James Avery |
| Multi-link chain | ½ in; you should fit one or two fingers under it | James Avery |
| Cuffs and bangles | Fit snug; measure across the hand for bangles | Tiffany, James Avery |
| Stretch beads | Extra length if the beads are large | Fire Mountain Gems |
Why "Medium" means different things
Size names aren't standard. Here's how a 7 in wrist is labeled by two sources:
| Source | What it calls a ~7 in wrist |
|---|---|
| Tiffany bracelet chart | Extra Large (6.76–7.25 in wrist) |
| Fire Mountain Gems | Medium (about 7 in) |
Fire Mountain Gems calls a wrist of about 6.5 in small and about 7½ to 8 in large. Tiffany's "Medium" is a 5.76–6.25 in wrist. So go by inches, not by the size name. Tote bags have the same problem, as our tote bag size guide shows.
Stretch bead bracelets: why bead size matters
A stretch bracelet's length is usually measured along the cord. Fire Mountain Gems tells beaders to string beads to the finished bracelet length and to allow a bit of extra length if the beads are large. Here's why, in our arithmetic:
- The cord runs through the center of each bead. The inside of the bracelet, the part that touches your wrist, is half a bead closer to the middle all the way around.
- The difference between the two circles is π × bead diameter. For 8 mm beads, that's 3.1416 × 8 mm = 25.1 mm, or about 1 in (1 in = 2.54 cm).
- So an 8 mm bead bracelet measuring 7.5 in along the cord has an inner circle of about 6.5 in at rest. It stretches to go over your hand, then relaxes back.
To estimate the cord length of a bracelet you already have, count the beads and multiply by the bead size. For example, 24 beads × 8 mm = 192 mm, or about 7.6 in. Real beads vary a little, so treat it as a close estimate.
Fire Mountain Gems puts an average wrist at about 7 in and says it would need a 7.25 to 7.5 in bracelet.
Questions people ask
How do I know my bracelet size?
Measure your wrist below the wrist bone with a paper strip or soft tape. Then add room for the style: about ½ in for leather or link bracelets, about 1 in for charm bracelets (James Avery's numbers). If you're between sizes, size up.
Is a 7 inch bracelet large?
No. For women it's average. James Avery says 7 in is the most common bracelet length in women's jewelry, with the standard range 6½ to 7½ in. A 7 in bracelet fits a wrist of about 6.5 in or a bit more. If 7 in is your wrist measurement, look at 7.5 in bracelets or longer.
What is the average bracelet size for a woman?
Brilliant Earth puts the average women's bracelet at 6.5 to 7 in. James Avery says 7 in is the most common. For men, Brilliant Earth gives 7.5 in as average, and James Avery says 8 in is the most common men's length, with a standard range of 7½ to 9 in.
What if I'm between two sizes?
Choose the larger one. Tiffany, Brilliant Earth and Pandora all give that advice.
How should a stretch bracelet fit?
It should roll over your hand without strain and sit without leaving a mark on your wrist. If the beads are large, you need more cord length than for small beads, because the beads take up space inside the circle (see the arithmetic above).
Can I measure my wrist without a tape measure?
Yes. Use the paper strip method above: wrap, mark, lay it on a ruler.
